Office building by the bunker at Szczepin

Szczepin – a huge block estate in the centre of Wrocław will become more modern

Szczepin situated between Podwale, Długa and Robotnicza streets is a large and ugly block estate. However, there is a chance that next year the area will significantly change. Next to high blocks of flats new office and residential buildings will grow.

The biggest development will be an office building of Verity Development, the company managed by Ali Dadressan. It will be built at the corner of Legnicka and Poznańska streets. – We’re starting construction in spring – says Agata Świderska from Verity Development. – The L-shaped building will have seven levels. It will comprise A-class offices.

Piotr Fokczyński, head of architecture department in the city council, considers Strzegomski Square, where the building will be raised, as the real central point of Szczepin precinct. – We must remember that in the bunker located at the square a museum of contemporary art will be open. So the vicinity will surely liven up and won’t be as neglected and forgotten by citizens of Wrocław as it is now – explains Mr. Fokczyński.

Apart from the Verity office building also other developments will be realized at Szczepin. At Ziemowita Street an apartment house called Mount Blanc Living will be built. The construction is supposed to be completed next year. Recently a hut staying here for years has been demolished.

This year works will be resumed on the construction site at Szczepińska Street, just behind Solidarności Square. There already exists a building shell but for several months there haven’t been any workers there. – We want to renew construction this year – declares Aleksander Limisiewicz from AKME.

City officials promise that the area will be prettier but also more functional. This is because the ground floors of new buildings will be arranged for shops and services. – Currently lack of services at Szczepin is the most arduous – says Piotr Fokczyński. It concerns mostly restaurants, banks or hairdresser studios. – Thanks to new developments this area will get a new life. Currently it’s a kind of a bedroom where nothing happens.

City officials still hope they will successfully sell a plot at the former Mikołajskie Hill, just by the railway station. – An office park could be built there – dreams Fokczyński. But for this moment there are no interested in buying the land. The price is 45 mln PLN.

Szczepin

Before the world war second the precinct was built up with tenement houses which were situated along Legnicka Street on its both sides. It was a typical downtown with many services. After the war for many years there were only ruins there. The tenement houses were demolished during the war. In the 70’s blocks of flats were built there.
